About this treatment
When the soft tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) becomes infected or inflamed — often because of deep decay, a crack or an injury — root canal treatment removes that tissue, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them.
Afterwards, many back teeth need a crown to protect them from breaking. Your dentist will explain whether that applies to you after examining the tooth and, usually, an X-ray.
When to see a dentist
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- Pain when biting
- Swelling or a pimple on the gum near a tooth
- A tooth that has darkened
Every mouth is different. This page is general information and not a diagnosis — your dentist will advise you after an examination.
